Service is so important isn’t it? It will make or break a business. A person that has a bad experience at a restaurant will tell at least 10 people why they had such a bad experience. We live in a referral business world. We are bombarded with recommendations from the so called “Foodies” of our generation. It’s actually considered cool to be a Foodie. If you know all the good spots then people will literally “follow” you on your food blog, Yelp page, Foursquare check-ins, Facebook Places, etc. On Yelp, you can even earn an ELITE badge if you review often, upload photos of food, create events, people follow you, etc.
My point is, food is in. But what’s just as important as in taste, is the service. Don’t you agree? Even if it was the best steak ever, poor service will easily make that 5 star restaurant into a 2 star. Read the scenario below.
Me: I really want to try out that new Korean BBQ place on 7th.
Anonymous: That place sucks! They’re so slow and they don’t even hook you up.
Me: Serious? Nevermind…where do you recommend then?
Anonymous: That one place on 3rd Street is really good.
Me: Thanks! I’m gonna check that place out.
That’s a common conversation that takes place in my world. Probably yours too. I’ve purposely not been to certain restaurants because of such horrible reviews from friends or food websites.
Today I’m chucking my haterade and giving back to the top 5 places that exemplified what real excellent service is.
Let’s get to it!
BEST SERVICE AWARD GOES TO THESE TOP 5 BUSINESSES
1. Arang Bar & Restaurant – The entire staff is very attentive to your needs. They reward repeat customers through reward bonus cards and what Koreans love called “service“. Service not as in customer service but service meaning free food or drinks. Thanks Paul hyung!
2. Gaam – Few weeks ago I came here with a few friends and ordered the mixed sashimi plate. It tasted horrible and so we asked the server to take it back. We didn’t even ask them to take the item off our bill. Five minutes later, the server comes with a plate of whole fried chicken and tells us that its for service. Also, the mixed sashimi plate was taken off our bill. Seriously? This rarely happens in Koreatown but it did at Gaam. A week later we stopped by for the happy hour and told our server that last time we didn’t like one of the dishes so to be on the safe side we asked for his recommendations. He suggested the Hibachi Steak. After reviewing the menu we decided to just order a bottle of sake and some fries (we agreed to eat at another location after a few drinks). About ten minutes later the server comes with the Hibachi Steak. He said that he was the manager and he wanted us to try the Hibachi Steak. We were amazed once again. This place definitely earned my respect and has earned a true fan. Thanks Randy!
3. Byul Dae Po – Not only are they known for their meat selection and gop chang (intestines) but they are also known for their excellent customer service. They change your grill continuously without you asking for it. They are generous with their banchan (side dishes) and they always offer bottles of soju or beer for service. Excellent staff and the manager noona is super cool.
4. 7 Dias Tires - Seriously, who HASN’T been here? They never try to up sell you. They work within your budget. If you can’t afford new tires, they suggest used ones. Honestly, the used ones are in great condition. They also ask you not to tip the employees. The employees put on your tires on super fast without expecting a single dime. How awesome is that?
5. Imperial Cleaners – As soon as I walk in, all I hear is “Hey Daniel! How are you doing???” from like 3 or 4 people. Not only do they all know me by name but they have memorized my phone number (at Imperial Cleaners they use your phone number to keep track of your clothes). Yea, it’s a little expensive but I never have to worry that it won’t be finished on time. Plus, all my loose buttons and threading will be fixed for free. They do an excellent job and because of that, I wouldn’t go elsewhere. I’ve had dry cleaners ruin new suits after one time of cleaning. I can’t afford to risk that so I will stick with these guys. Thank you Imperial Cleaners for making me look so slick everyday. >:)
Til next time, ciao!
